The Very Hungry Caterpillar

A mindful children’s lesson and activity based on the book The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

I’m so excited to share my “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” mindful lesson with you and your family.

It is one of my kids favorites stories and an all time classic.

Below you will find a free lesson plan, including sight words for pre-schoolers, and fun activities linked for you and your kiddos.

Of course, if you need a new copy of the book for your home or gifts please click the Amazon links below and support me because as an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Free lesson and activity for The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

I created a lesson plan for my children while we were reading the book.

It includes a combination of breath work for mindfulness, yoga poses for movement, and music to have fun with by singing Dance For The Sun by Kira Willey.

Of course, the most important part of the lesson is reading the book together as a family.

According to Kids and Family reading report, about 90% of families save reading together for a bedtime activity. But it doesn’t always have to be, and it could also be a great transitional activity for families to build a routine around.

Our kiddos want to be with us, and this mix of activities can be a fun way to engage with quality time. Plus, you’ll all get to know the cute little caterpillar who has a big appetite!

Families with big age gaps can still enjoy reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

My children have big age gaps (11, 7, and 2), and this unit was still a winner!

I know that every family is different, but my 11-year-old really enjoyed helping her brother and sister create their crafts as part of the Art section of the lesson.

Our table at home had all of the supplies spread out all over!

Wooden table with craft supplies spread across it with the book The Very Hungry Caterpillar in the top right corner. All of the craft supplies can be used to create fun things to play with while reading the book.

Here are some more fun lesson ideas separated by traditional subject headers.

Enjoy and spread those wings! :)

Math: Counting the fruit for preschoolers, adding and subtracting for first graders, and multiplying large numbers for upper grades.

Science: Children will learn about the lifecycle of a butterfly. After you read this adorable book, join Ranger Zak for a fun youtube video that shows the wonderful life cycle of a butterfly.

Art- Recreate the story of “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” by creating puppets with construction paper and popsicle sticks.

Reading- Practice High-frequency words (ideas already available in my free printable) and retell the story with the puppets. Have older children read to younger children to get them excited about teaching and helping others.

Social Emotional Growth: We all change and grow. Ask your child if they are excited to grow up or scared. Listen to their answers, and you’ll learn a lot.

We also bought this fun Life Cycle kit that my kids love.

Check the Life Cycle kit on Amazon or follow the image below.

I was a bit skeptical about the toy set at first, but it really brought the unit to life and they enjoyed it, so win-win :)

Enjoy this cute color by numbers with your sweet little butterfly!
